You are invited to the world’s northernmost fencing tournament, the 2009 Levi Open
Arctic Challenge. Located 150 km north of the Arctic Circle amid the spectacular nature
of Finnish Lapland, Levi is also one of the fastest growing ski centers in Europe. For the
last decade, fencers from around the world gathered in Levi each January for a celebration
of sword and snow.
This winter is no exception. We will be competing in men’s and women’s foil and
epee. There will be awards for the top eight and top veteran in each event.
After fencing you can relax in the indoor swimming pool overlooking the ski slopes,
saunas and steam baths at the venue.
While in Levi you can go from the fencing piste to the skiing piste. Levi, host to alpine
skiing World Cup competitions, has 44 downhill pistes and 27 lifts including two
gondolas. There are also 230 km of cross-country ski tracks and 886 km of snowmobile
routes. If you stay a few extra days you can try your hand at driving a reindeer sled or
mushing a team of huskies. With luck you might even see the aurora borealis at night.
Getting to Levi for you arctic adventure is easy. The Kittilä airport is only 15 minutes
away. Finnair and Blue 1 provide multiple daily flights between Helsinki and Kittilä.

Transportation The Kittilä Airport is 15 km from Levi. At this time of year Blue 1 flies between Helsinki and
