INVITATION TO CHALLENGE EUGÈNE FILLOL 2007 - INTERNATIONAL EPEE COMPETITION IN STOCKHOLM FOR MEN AND WOMEN

Eugène Fillol Challenge Prize, Johan Harmenberg’s Honorary Prize, Her Royal Highness Princess Birgitta’s Honorary Prize

FFF welcomes all international fencers, men and women, to the second international epee competition in the name of Maître d’armes Eugène Fillol.

We are looking forward to an exciting and challenging competition with very special prizes for the winners.
With this new international epee competition, FFF wants to honour Sweden’s first Maître d’Armes, Monsieur Eugène Fillol, who was active at FFF from year 1901 to 1914. FFF’s ambition and expectation for this competition is that it will become one of the largest and most popular fencing competitions in the Nordic region.

Eugène Fillol - CHALLENGE PRIZE
As a maître d’armes at FFF between the years 1901 and 1914, Maître Eugène Fillol was one of the driving forces behind the creation of modern fencing in Sweden. When he left Sweden to defend his country in World War One, he never left his position as maître d’armes. Sadly, he never returned to FFF as he gave his life for France during the war. Before leaving Sweden he instituted a challenger’s prize for FFF to be won at the club’s internal 3 days championship. The magnificent statue he donated has been cared for by FFF and its members throughout the years. It is now reinstated as a challenge prize, this time for the competition that bears his name. Each year’s winners will have their names engraved on a silver plaque on the base.

Johan Harmenberg - HONORARY PRIZE 7000:-
Johan Harmenberg’s Honorary Prize is divided into two parts. The winner of the men’s competition will receive a prize of 5000SEK. Additionally 2000SEK will be awarded to the best junior fencer in the men’s competition. Johan is FFF’s most successful fencer of all time and is the only Swedish fencer that has won an individual Olympic gold medal. Additionally, he has won several World Championship medals and many other international victories. To us at FFF, it is obvious that the prize in the men’s competition should bear our foremost member’s name.

Her Royal Highness Princess Birgitta - HONORARY PRIZE 7000:-
Her Royal Highness Princess Birgitta has been a member of FFF since 1958. When she retired as an active fencer in 1961 she was awarded a lifetime honorary membership. During the princess’ fencing career she was a member of the FFF foil team that won the Swedish Championship in 1960. It is an honour and a privilege for FFF to be able to dedicate this prize to Her Royal Highness. We hope that the winner in the women’s competition is equally honoured. The winner of the women’s championship will receive 5000SEK and 2000SEK will be awarded to the best junior fencer in the women’s competition.

FFF - FÖRENINGEN FÖR FÄKTKONSTENS FRÄMJANDE
FFF – the oldest fencing club in Sweden – has during the years fostered very successful fencers that have been awarded Olympic
medals, World Championships and more than one hundred Swedish Championships. Almost all famous Swedish fencers and leaders have fenced in our fencing hall. Their names include Sven Thofelt, Orwar Lindwall, Dag Åkerberg, Bela Rerrich and, of course, Johan Harmenberg, 1977 World Champion and 1980 Olympic gold medallist.
Today, our French maître d’armes, Thierry Trottein, is in charge of fostering our fencers. With his five French championships and several medals from world cup and other international competitions, Maître Trottein brings a deep knowledge and profound experience.
Today’s focus at FFF is on our young fencers. Our hope is that they one day will make Swedish fencing the great sport it has been in Sweden and is internationally. Challenge Eugène Fillol is a step in that direction.

The Competition will take place in Stockholm, Åkeshovshallen, 12-13th of May 2007 with individual competitions on Saturday and team competitions on Sunday.
