Tärkeä Italian miekkailun persoona Piero de Favento on poistunut keskuudestamme (15.3.2006) 91-vuotiaana.

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death on 15 March
2006, of our friend Piero de Favento (ITA), at the age of 91.
Important personality of the Italian fencing, he was notably national
councillor of the Italian Fencing Federation from 1961 to 1972, then
Deputy President from 1973 to 1976.
Born in Trieste, in 1914, Piero de Favento became close to fencing
thanks to his prestigious university results : university national
champion at epee in team in 1936, university national champion at foil
in team in 1939, and member of the university national team in
Warsaw in 1938 and in Budapest in 1940.
Holder of a diploma in medicine (urology), he joined the army, where
he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. Piero de Favento never
went far away from the world of fencing and took important functions
within the FIE. He was notably member of the Medical Commission
since 1969 and President of the said commission from 1981 to 1984.
Piero de Favento also officiated as International Referee in the
Olympiads of Roma in 1960, and Tokyo in 1964.
An impressive cursus honorum, which brought him the Gold Star of
Sport Emeritus as well as the title of Chevalier of the Merit of the
Republic.
Also involved in politics, de Favento was the deputy of the department
of hygiene and health of the city of Trieste. The funeral is scheduled to
hold on 18 March 2006 in Trieste in the chapel of Costalunga street.
The International Fencing Federation expresses its deepest sympathy
to the family of Piero de Favento as well as to the Italian fencing, in
these painful circumstances.
